To pair with the open shirt, our favorite pirate has a yellow sash around his waist. It’s tied at one side and the leftover fabric hangs down.

Any piece of yellow fabric or even a yellow scarf would work provided it’s long enough to fit around your waist. If you decide on a ready-made Luffy costume, the sash will usually come with it.

Although Straw Hat Luffy wears his hat almost all of the time (we’ll talk about that in the next section), you can still see his hair. It’s short, black, and quite shaggy with pieces hanging down over his forehead.

If you have dark hair you may be able to style your own to match his. If not, there are plenty of wigs online that will work - some come pre-styled and others you will have to cut and style yourself.

One of the most iconic parts of Luffy’s outfit is his straw hat - he’s literally nicknamed after it! It has a wide brim, is quite large on his head, and has a red ribbon around it.

Some ready-made costumes come with the hat, or you can find a replica online. However, like much of his costume, it’s pretty easy to copy. You can simply source a cheap straw hat with a wide brim and add some red ribbon or a red piece of fabric around it.

You’ll need some sandals like Luffy’s - they have a woven straw sole and black straps that go over the top of his feet.

There are plenty of replica Luffy sandals online, but they don’t tend to come with ready-made costumes so you will need to buy them separately. You could also go for any straw sandals - it depends on how accurate to the character you want to be.

Luffy has a noticeable scar on his chest in the shape of an ‘X’ that he got during a battle. Since his shirt is worn open, the scar is very visible. Therefore, it’s important to include it in your cosplay.

You can copy the shape of the scar using body paint or makeup. If you’re very creative, you could use special effects makeup (often referred to as SFX makeup) to give the scar texture. This will make it look more realistic. There are some tutorials online with pictures and videos to help guide you if it’s your first time trying something like this.

If you have breasts, you will need to get creative with this. You could use body tape to cover them and create a smoother canvas for the scar. Alternatively, you could wear a skin-colored top under the shirt with the X drawn on it. Or you could think outside the box and make the character more feminine.

Aside from the scar, you can pull your look together by adding some extra details. Luffy has a muscular body, so muscles can be seen on his torso as well as the scar. You could add these using body paint or makeup if needed.

He also has another scar under his left eye. You can copy this using makeup or face paint, or even a temporary tattoo that matches the shape.

He chose to portray the pre-time skip version of Luffy, and he captures the personality of the character flawlessly. His poses and facial expressions are spot on. Plus, you can see how much fun he’s having with it, which makes you smile!

Her feminine version of Luffy is beautifully done, with a white cropped top worn under the open red shirt rather than trying to mimic the bare male chest. You can see the top of the X scar disappearing into the top, which adds a sexy and mysterious feel to the look.

Sero is a digital creator who modestly states that they cosplay sometimes. We think their cosplays are inventive, fun, and playful. We’re not surprised they have a community of loyal fans on their Instagram serochanoficial.

Another person who has put a feminine spin on the Luffy character is anyrusso_. A dancer, content creator, and occasional cosplayer - her talents are boundless!
