Hatsune Miku: How To, Ideas & Where to Buy

Hatsune Miku is a vocaloid developed by Crypton Future Media, Inc. This means she is essentially a virtual pop star! Due to her distinctive style and cute appearance, she’s also a very popular character to cosplay.

We’ll go through all you need to know to put together an amazing Hatasune Miku costume. Let’s get started!

How to Make Your Hatsune Miku Costume

01

Shirt

Hatsune Miku wears a grayish-silver shirt with a blue hem. It’s sleeveless to allow plenty of arm movement during performances. On one side across the chest there is a yellow stripe and the word ‘vocaloid’ in black capital lettering.

There are plenty of options for ready to wear Hastume Miku costumes, where you can get the exact shirt for your cosplay. However, if you are feeling crafty you could make one from a gray shirt by sewing on the extra details.

  • The character wears a gray sleeveless shirt with some detailing.
  • Source a ready-made Hatsune Miku shirt or try to make one yourself.

02

Skirt

To go with her shirt, the character has a short black skirt. It’s pleated and has a blue hem like the shirt. In many depictions, the skirt also has some yellow or white stripes near the hem.

You can choose to buy a replica Hatsune Miku skirt as part of a cosplay outfit, or you could make one yourself. Start with a base of a black pleated skirt and sew on the details. If you’re not handy with a needle, you could even use fabric paint!

  • Source a skirt to match the shirt for your cosplay.
  • Buy one ready-made or try to make one - don’t forget the fine details!

03

 Arm Warmers

The iconic arm warmers are a must-have for your cosplay! They’re long and black, extending almost up to her shoulder. To match the skirt and shirt, they have a blue hem along the bottom. They sort of flare out at the bottom, which adds some wonderful movement to the costume.

Now you could stop there, or you could source arm warmers with the extra details seen in some Hatsu Miku costumes. She often has a robotic vocaloid ‘screen’ on each arm warmer, which shows her battery level, sound frequency, and other features. If you really want to show you’ve put the work into your outfit, this is an excellent addition.

If you choose to keep the arm warmers plain, you could simply source some black ones and add on the hem. But if you want to go for the full detail, you can buy them as part of a Hatsu Miku costume.

  • Source black arm warmers with a blue hem.
  • Consider adding the ‘screen’ details to each arm warmer.

04

Stockings

The character wears thigh-high black stockings which sometimes have a matching blue band around the top, like the hem of the skirt and shirt. However, plain black stockings would work just fine.

  • Hatsu Miku wears thigh-high black stockings.
  • Source black stockings to add to your look.

05

Boots

Hatsune Miku usually wears ankle boots - they’re black with that matching blue stripe around the bottom. They appear to be a leather or PVC type of material. In some representations, she wears black shoes rather than boots. Either way, both options are sturdy and have a low heel.

Many ready-made Hatsu Miku costumes come with boots, but you could also make your own. Plain black ankle boots or shoes would do fine. But if you add the blue line to tie the outfit together - even better!

  • The character wears either black ankle boots or shoes with a blue base.
  • Buy boots as part of a cosplay costume, or source plain ones and add detail.

06

Wig

It wouldn’t be Hatsune Miku without the distinctive blue hair. She has it styled into two bunches on the side of her head. They are very long, reaching down to her knees! They are often tied with ribbons. She also has bouncy bangs and face framing layers.

Since most of us don’t have knee-length blue hair, you’ll likely have to find a wig. There are lots of long blue cosplay wigs that you can buy and style to match the character’s hair. Alternatively, you can buy one specifically made and styled ready for you.

  • Our vocalid has bright blue hair worn in bunches.
  • Source a long blue wig and ensure it’s styled to match the character’s hair.

07

Headset

We can’t perform without a headset! Although you could skip this item, it’s a striking featurel to add to your outfit. There are different colors and styles of headset seen across portrayals of Hatsu Miku, but perhaps the most memorable is the butterfly headset!

You could source any headphones and paint them to match your cosplay. There are even detailed guides online to help you make the butterfly option. Or, you can seek a ready-made Hatsu Miku headset.

  • Consider adding a headset to your outfit to pull it all together.
  • Source a plain option or add decoration.

08

 Fine Details

Adding as much detail to your cosplay as possible shows you know the character well and are dedicated to your craft. With our vocaloid, there are tons of options! Probably the most important is her long blue tie which she wears loosely around her neck. This typically comes with the shirt and skirt in ready to wear costumes.

You can also add her tattoo which is a red ‘01’ on one shoulder.  In some images it says ‘vocaloid’ under it, while in others it says her name. You could add this with makeup, body paint, or find a temporary tattoo.

The character sometimes has a black belt with blue triangles around her waist, with part of it hanging down. This often comes with ready-made costumes, or you could easily add some blue paint to a black belt.

Finally, you could add some makeup. The character can sometimes be seen with blue eyeshadow to match the blue details in her outfit. Some quite dramatic lashes will work well, and some subtle lipstick. If you really want to go all out, you could wear bright blue contact lenses to match her eye color and add blue nail polish to your nails.

  • Consider adding plenty of little details to your cosplay.
  • You could add a tie, tattoo, belt, makeup, and more!

Top 10 Hatsune Miku Cosplays

01

Saya_scarlet

Saya Scarlet has built herself a large following on social media as a cosplayer and we’re not surprised! She is very talented at putting her own spin on characters while staying accurate to the vibe of who they are.

She has a particular talent for portraying Hatsune Miku in a wide variety of outfits, styles, and scenes. Our favorite is this one of her ‘snow Miku’ - she’s kept the shape and elements of the original costume but made them white with blue! Even her hair is a lighter blue to fit in with the snowy scene behind her. She is posed dancing playfully in the snow - what a striking scene!

02

Jacky.fly

Jacky Fly is a cosplayer, artist, and fashion designer from Germany. Unlike our other Hatsune Miku cosplayers, Jacky Fly is male. Yet he pulls off female characters with beauty and grace.

His Hatsune Miku cosplay is so well done, with great attention paid to the finest details of the character. He’s even included her tattoo and the printed details on the skirt, shirt, and arm warmers. His chosen headset has kitten ears and blue coloring to fit in with the character’s color theme.

03

Kirapika.cos

Kira is a cosplayer and a makeup artist - and we can see that clearly in her cosplays. Her consideration to the makeup of the characters is incredible. It adds a whole other level to her photographs.

In her cosplay of our favorite vocaloid you can see the detail she puts into the makeup. She wears blue eyebrows, blue eyeshadow, and delicate white graphic liner. She’s chosen a different outfit than the one we’ve focused on and it’s skillfully done.

04

Nappyraptor

With well thought out poses, backgrounds, and outfits, we had to include Nappy. Her portrayals of popular female characters are clearly done with passion.

In her vocaloid cosplay, she is captured turning back to face the camera as though in the middle of a performance. She has stayed accurate to the character's costume throughout. You can clearly see the effort she’s put into her cosplay.

05

Colourete

Cosplayer and digital creator colourete portrays her characters with attention to detail and and passion for her craft.

Her version of Hatsune Miku is beautifully done. She’s gone for a shiny, PVC look to the whole outfit and it really makes her cosplay stand out. She’s chosen knee high boots with a high heel rather than the stockings and flat boots of the original costume. This adds some intrigue and an extra layer of sexiness to the outfit.

06

Mishi_miku

There’s no way we could miss mishi_miku from our list - her whole cosplay page is dedicated to Hatsune Miku! She adores this character and spends her time cosplaying her in different outfits, scenes, and poses.

It was hard to choose just one photo of her cosplays, but we singled it down to this one. It’s taken mid-performance and shows the character’s energy on stage wonderfully.

07

Hana Sparrow Cosplay

A Toronto based cosplayer, Hana Sparrow has been cosplaying for 13 years - impressive! She loves what she does and has built a huge following on social media as a result of her passion.

Her Hatsune Miku cosplay takes a far more relaxed approach to the character. She doesn’t include the exact features of the character’s outfit, instead choosing a comfy looking outfit that fits with the character’s energy. However, her makeup and wig have got the character down!

08

Cha.coser

Ocha of Cha.coser is a 23 year old Indonesian cosplayer. Although they have a smaller following on social media than many of the other creators on our list, in our opinion, it should be much bigger! They are adept at what they do.

Their cosplay of Hatsune Miku is beautifully done with amazing attention to detail. They’ve even included the iconic kitten-ear headset and a backpack with our vocaloid’s tattoo on it.

09

Pomponmy

A skilled cosplayer, Pomponmy focuses on depicting her characters with a sense of mischief and fun. Her loyal following love her playful cosplays.

Her Hatsune Miku cosplay captures the character’s attitude and confidence perfectly. She poses with a cheeky wink to the camera and one hand raised to her face.

10

Miochi.tenshi

Hailing from Chile, miochi.tenshi isn’t afraid to think outside the box when it comes to her cosplays. She often shakes things up by choosing to play different versions of her characters which makes her stand out from the crowd.

Her vocaloid cosplay is no different - she’s chosen to cosplay a vampire version of Hatsune Miku. And she’s done it brilliantly! From the vampire teeth to her choice of outfit, the whole vibe is immaculate.
